We dyed our eggs yesterday, having been carefully hoarding the white-shelled ones from our Blue Andalusian hens. I wasn’t very well prepared, being out of both cream of tartar and white vinegar for mordants. I tried using powdered citric acid, but that left a white powder on the eggs after they dried, so I switched to using a splash of apple cider vinegar.
Here are the best of the bunch:
The materials we used for dyes were onion skin (orange-ish brown), turmeric (yellow), hibiscus flowers (pale lilac/lavender), blueberries (reddish purple), and dandelion flowers (earthy green).
Notes for next year: bring back the cream of tartar as a mordant. The colors are brighter and they eggs end up with a glittery finish that doesn’t obscure the color. Also bring back purple cabbage (bright clear blue) and try liquid chlorophyll (bright green) and beets (bright pink).
